We Wept

My family was safe.  Friends were calling.   They were safe.  The people I knew were alive.  One by one that day we heard.  One other friend worked for the Housing Authority.  It was 11pm before we heard he was safe.  He had also walked across Manhattan.

But then I saw their faces on cable.  I was flicking channels.  We were all home, safe, but other were telling of the voice messages and  emails.  They hadn't heard anything since getting them. Silence.

The sadness crept in.  I cried.  We all did.  Privately, silently, inwardly.  Who did this - Why?   The horror of it started sinking in.  The poor heartbroken souls who had loved ones working in the Towers or the Pentagon.  As night crept in the despair in their faces opened all of our hearts to their plight.  No one knew what to do, then slowly it started.  The candles!
